Dumps of up to 30 centimetres are expected on many mountain passes in the south - with more white stuff for the Desert Road and the Remutaka Hill, north of Wellington.
MetService meteorologist, Mmathatelo Makgabutlane says the top of the South Island to north Canterbury will be worst hit.
She says snow could get down to 100 metres, with heavy snowfalls above 200.
Makgabutlane says it's quite a significant snow event so people in those areas need to be aware of the situation.
Gale force winds are also expected in central parts of the country, including Wellington and the Marlborough coast.
