Transpower says more generation has been offered and demand has dropped after it issued a warning this afternoon.
The only lights to go out are near where a wire fell from a tower in North Canterbury - which spurred Transpower's alert.
Repair work will go ahead overnight and should be finished by tomorrow afternoon, regardless of the alert level change.
Power was cut to nearly 18-thousand North Island homes last Monday, after providers were asked to ease demand.
