The man left the Ellerslie quarantine facility around 1am yesterday morning, and wasn't arrested until early in the afternoon.
He's been charged with failing to comply with a Covid-19 health order.
The mother told TVNZ her son had breached Covid-19 rules twice since testing positive for the virus on Wednesday.
She says the first time was when the 23-year-old found out he had Covid and left home, and the second was yesterday's escape when he was found asleep in the family's sleep-out.
His mother's admitted it was hard to report her own son, but it was important to do it for the community
