Samuel Pou has a minimum non-parole period of 17 years.
A jury unanimously found him guilty of murder at the High Court in Whangarei in June, over the death of 42-year-old Bridget Simmonds at a rural property south of Kaikohe in 2019.
At today's sentencing, Justice Christine Gordon said Simmonds was particularly vulnerable in an isolated area with no cellphone coverage, and Pou didn't confess his crime for more than a year.
She rejected Pou's claims he targeted Simmonds' legs to avoid killing her.
