In 2010 part of State Highway three was renamed Pohutukawa Place when the Bell Block Bypass opened.
The renamed road had a reduced speed limit of 50 kilometres an hour.
But it was never formalised, so the limit was technically still 100 kilometres an hour.
Transport lawyer Steve Cullen says people should take action.
Cullen says anyone charged for travelling over 50 kilometres an hour on the road should seek reimbursement.
