The industrial action will start just a day after the reopening of Auckland's border.
The Rail and Maritime Transport Union has confirmed South Island union members at KiwiRail will go on strike on Thursday 16 December.
North Island union members will go on strike the following day -- bringing a stop to all train control functions on both islands, including rail ferries and Auckland and Wellington Metro networks.
It's the first national stoppage of the rail system since 1994.
