The tourists added just 40 runs for two wickets in the opening session, but skipper Mominul Haque and Liton Das have combined for an unbeaten partnership of 85 runs, to steer the tourists to 288 for four in the afternoon session.
Haque has just reached his half century, with his side now trailing the Black Caps by 40 runs.
Earlier Neil Wagner earned his third wicket of the innings, while Trent Boult claimed his first.
