Pharmac data reveals Pasifika aged 20 years and older are three times more likely to have gout compared to non-Maori, non-Pasifika.
But about eight-thousand-700 more Pacific people need preventative treatment each year to achieve equitable access to the medicine.
Arthritis New Zealand says some people on the right dose, may never suffer a gout attack again.
Chief executive Philip Kearney says in contrast, a flare up can be debilitating.
He says some people can't even move, and just the breeze coming through a window can create pain.
