Auckland's battle of the booze is heading to the Supreme Court
26 April 2022
The Supreme Court granted leave on April 14, for supermarket chains to appeal in a long-running court battle over the city's liquor sales laws.
It follows a Court of Appeal ruling in favour of an Auckland Council policy change, to close off-licence liquor sales at 9pm, down from 11pm.
Meanwhile, the council has decided not to include separate rules for liquor stores in a new signs bylaw - which would restrict advertising outside.
Alcohol Healthwatch executive director Nicki Jackson says advertising is harmful.
She says it's particularly damaging for young people, and is also triggering for New Zealanders with alcohol use disorders.
