Health authorities are urging the public to save Christchurch's emergency department for emergencies

The pressure was heightened for Canterbury DHB staff over the weekend, with several trauma cases within a short time frame.
CEO Peter Bramley says people with non-emergency cases will experience an extremely long wait as it needs to ensure those with life-threatening conditions are seen first.
When ED is busy, people are encouraged to visit an Urgent Care centre or phone Healthline.
The pressure doesn't stop at ED - as of yesterday morning Christchurch Hospital was operating at a 109 per cent capacity.
