The officer was assaulted at the intersection of Great North and Station roads in Penrose about midday on Monday.
Police Association President Chris Cahill says the officer's injuries will heal, but he's concerned about the mental harm the assault will cause.
He says it's another example of the atrocious and unacceptable level of violence officers face on a daily basis.
Cahill says officers shouldn't be going to work expecting to be assaulted, but that's now the risk they're dealing with.
A 27-year-old has been arrested and charged with intent to injure over Monday's assault.
