Blustery gales of up to 120k hit Kelburn in Wellington overnight, followed closely by recordings of 115k in Christchurch's Lyttelton.
Wind of up to 100k have also blasted Christchurch, Roxburgh Aerodrome Airport, Milford Sound and the North Island's Ngawi.
Strong wind warnings are in place for much of the country, but conditions are expected to ease through the course of the day.
MetService meteorologist Dan Corrigan says it's important drivers are careful.
He says driving can be especially hazardous for high-sided vehicles and motorcycles.
