A cold blast is hitting the South Island -- with snow warnings in place for southern and eastern parts of the island

The heaviest snow is forecast for inland Canterbury, where up to 25 centimetres could fall above 300 metres.
There are also road snowfall warnings for most State Highways.
MetService meteorologist Aidan Pyselman says people should prepare for cold temperatures this week, particularly in the south.
He says most places in the South Island will only reach four or five degrees.
