The capital recorded 79 point 5 hours of sunshine - compared to its average of 99 point 1 hours.
MetService's Andy Best says Dunedin and Christchurch also followed suit with the cloudy weather and were below the sunshine average.
He says the averages are down because of easterly winds which brought cloud.
Andy Best says places on the West Coast like Nelson and Hokitika were above their sunshine averages.
Auckland was also sunnier than usual with 124 point 1 hours compared to the average of 116 point 2.
