Nearly 290-thousand dollars has been given to support events across the country on Waitangi Day

Jacinda Ardern says 46 events have been given support from the Commemorating Waitangi Day Fund.

The Prime Minister says they range from large-scale events attracting tens of thousands, to smaller gatherings at community centres.

Ardern is kicking off her Waitangi itinerary today - she's heading to the Bay of Islands for the Iwi Chairs Forum, ahead of next week's commemorations.
