    North Island severe storm now eased - thunderstorm warnings lifted

    The severe storm that pounded the northern North Island has now eased somewhat and the thunderstorm warning has been lifted


    Roofs were ripped from several homes in St Heliers has high wind gusts, torrential rain and lightning strikes swept across Auckland.

    About one-third of the plastic membrane roof of The Cloud on the waterfront has been ripped off and blown into the Waitemata.

    The storm moved on towards the Hunua Ranges and Clevedon, then to Thames, Firth of Thames, Southern Coromandel Ranges and Kerepehi.

    Oamaru Airport has recorded an impressive 81mm of rain so far this weekend - double what usually falls during the whole of August.

    The weather will remain unsettled over northern and central New Zealand today, with more thunderstorms forecast for western areas.
