    One person has died following a fleeing driver incident in Oamaru this morning


    Police received a report of a vehicle being driven dangerously on the Hampden-Palmerston Road, in Waimate, around 6:30.

    Officers commenced a chase but were forced to abandon it a short time later.

    The vehicle was later found crashed at the intersection of Severn Street and Wansbeck Street in Oamaru.

    One person died at the scene and a second occupant was taken to hospital by helicopter.
