A 7.4 quake struck just before 1am this morning -- south of the Kermadec Islands and about 710 kilometres north-east of Gisborne -- at at depth of about 33 kilometres.
Chatham Islands resident Matt McKay says it's the first quake he's ever experienced.
He says it was strong, and seemed to go for a long time.
McKay says there was no noise with it, but it felt like someone was punching the back of the sofa he was sitting on.
The quake was also felt in Hawke's Bay, Gisborne, Bay of Plenty, Horowhenua and Wellington.
