    Thousands of people have been woken by an earthquake off the west coast of the lower North Island



    The 4.6 magnitude shake hit just before 4am, around 30 kilometres west of Paraparaumu, at a depth of 33 kilometres.

    It caused light shaking, and was felt across the lower North Island and top of the south.

    Geonet says it's had reports from more than five and a half thousand people.
