Rain has started to fall on Wellington ... but only time will tell if thunder will join the party
15 December 2021
MetService has issued a severe thunder storm watch for Wellington and the Wairarapa until 8pm, with 25 to 40 millimetres of rain expected to fall an hour in some areas.
Regional emergency management say it's just a 'watch' notice at this stage.
Manager Jeremy Holmes says so far they're expecting minor disruption.
He says it may cause some surface flooding, but nothing like the flooding last week.
Rain's forecast in other parts of the country - up to 140 millimeters in the Canterbury plains, and up to 180 millimeters east of Whakatane.
Auckland's downpours have passed - with isolated showers in store for the rest of today.
