A severe thunderstorm warning is in effect for much of the Lower North Island

The warning applies to Horowhenua, Carterton, Tararua, Kapiti Coast, Palmerston North, Masterton, Upper Hutt and South Wairarapa.
MetService says severe thunderstorms passed near Levin, Otaki, the Tararua Ranges, Hokio Beach, Waitarere, Ohau and Eketahuna a short time ago.
They're due to pass near Masterton, Mauriceville, Mt Bruce, Shannon, Kopuaranga and Mikimiki shortly.
MetService says the storms could cause very heavy rain, damaging wind gusts, possible tornadoes and hail, and possible flooding.
