Waka Kotahi is warning state highway conditions across the South Island are changing quickly - and motorists should be prepared for unexpected hazards

The Seddon to Kaikoura route is now closed by flooding, and routes including Franz Josef to Ross will be reassessed in coming hours.

Motorists stranded by flooding on State Highway One between Blenheim and Seddon are taking refuge in a hall.

Meanwhile in the North Island, a massive slip has closed State Highway One north of Auckland.

A small number of properties in the northern and western parts of the Auckland region are without power due to strong winds and heavy rain.
