    A soldier has been killed in a double fatal crash in Canterbury


    Emergency services were called to a two-vehicle crash at the intersection of State Highway One and Looker Rd, near Rangitata on Friday.

    Private Tristan McQueen and an Ashburton man died at the scene - a child was seriously injured and rushed to Starship Hospital in Auckland.

    New Zealand Army acting chief brigadier Rose King says McQueen joined the army in July 2017 as a Private in the Royal New Zealand Infantry Regiment.

    She says he received his Defence Force Service Medal in 2020.
