Flights at Auckland Airport have been disrupted as wild winds hammer parts of the North Island

Flights at Auckland Airport have been disrupted as wild winds hammer parts of the North Island

Seven domestic flights leaving from the city have been canned, with others delayed.

Several international flight departures have also been held up, and a United Airlines flight to San Francisco has been cancelled.

It follows the Harbour Bridge being closed five times so far today because of winds over 90 kilometres an hour.

There've been reports from New Plymouth of what some locals describe as "decent westerly gusts around 100 kilometres an hour.

PowerCo says about 3000 properties across Taranaki, Coromandel and the Bay of Plenty have no electricity.

The lack of power comes as MetService has forecast an overnight low of 13C for New Plymouth overnight.

And we've been told a tree has fallen on a vehicle in the Bell Block area.

Some residents in Swanson Piha and Muriwai are also without electricity tonight.
