Up to 97 percent of rescues at Central Otago District Council pools between 2018 and 2023, involved children under eight-years-old.
As a result, the council is introducing an orange and purple wristband system.
Orange is for under 5s, to remind parents and caregivers to always remain within arms' reach.
Purple is for children aged 5 to 9 years, to show a caregiver should be actively supervising within the pool area.
They will be initially trialled at the Cromwell and Alexandra pools for three months.
