Police are asking for any information after a 'Help' sign was spotted on the banks of a South Island lake

The message in the sands of Lake Ahaura on the West Coast was seen by a helicopter flying overhead.

Police want to hear from anyone who knows of parties having gone into the area, inland from Greymouth near Lake Brunner, recently.

They would also like to hear from anyone who may have written the message.
