New Zealand's only aluminium recycler may close because of a gas shortage

New Zealand's only aluminium recycler may close because of a gas shortage

Glucina Alloys in Auckland's Avondale turns around 200 tonnes of scrap into refined ingots for manufacturers a month.

BusinessDesk reports its natural gas contract with Genesis Energy runs out next year, and it'll only get shorter and more expensive contracts after that.

Manager Steven Welburn says switching to electricity will cost the small firm around 800-thousand dollars even though most of the infrastructure is already there.

Local lines company Vector says the cost is because it's an enhanced connection and the load is on par with a large subdivision.
