ACC received more than 540 claims for tattoo injuries last year, and has received more than 480 claims so far this year.
Botched home-jobs are leading to health risks, including scarring, sepsis and in extreme cases even amputation.
Bay of Islands Ink tattoo studio owner Kerryn Regling says  the problem's out of control in Northland.
She says artists in her studio are specialising in covering up botched home tattoos.
