Metservice is lifting its yellow severe thunderstorm watch in Northland, while heavy rain and strong winds persist in the region

It says 18mm of rain fell in Kaikohe this morning, while a slip on State Highway 1 caused the road to close yesterday.

Northlanders and holidaymakers are frustrated with disruptions caused by the weather, on the last weekend of the school holidays.

Meteorologist Alwyn Bakker says the worst of it appears to be over.

He says the risk of severe thunderstorms has eased, but heavy weather will persist.
