Oscar Piastri beats Lando Norris in Miami Grand Prix to extend championship lead

Australian Oscar Piastri produces another brilliant drive to claim the Formula 1 Miami Grand Prix, his fourth win of the season.

Australian Oscar Piastri has produced another brilliant drive to claim the Formula 1 Miami Grand Prix, his fourth win of the season.

Starting fourth on the grid, Piastri held off a late charge from teammate Lando Norris to extend his lead in the F1 drivers' championship.

Mercedes driver George Russell took advantage of a fortuitous virtual safety car to claim third, while pole sitter Max Verstappen placed fourth.

Piastri claimed the lead on lap 14 after passing Verstappen at turn one, wary of the Dutchman, who had defended sternly against Norris on the first lap, resulting in the British driver going off track and falling down to sixth.

Piastri at one point built a 9-second gap to Norris, who drove well to fight his way back into contention, but the race was never truly in doubt as the Australian managed his pace and claimed victory by 4.6 seconds.

"Qualifying was one of my trickiest sessions of the year, so to come away with the win is an amazing result," Piastri said.

"I was aware enough to avoid Max in turn one, and from then I knew I had a good pace advantage. The car was incredible today."

Piastri has now won the last three grands prix.

The Australian became the first McLaren driver to win three in a row since Finnish great Mika Häkkinen won the 1997 European Grand Prix and the 1998 races in Australia and Brazil.

Piastri has a 16-point lead over Norris in the drivers' championship with a quarter of the season now complete.

Norris looked annoyed post-race, potentially realising he had the pace to win had he not driven wide on the opening lap.

The Brit appealed to his team that Verstappen had forced him off the track, which led him to be shuffled to sixth.

"I paid the price for not doing a good enough job today, but still happy to be second,' Norris said.

It was a short day at the office for Australian Jack Doohan, who retired on lap one following a collision at the first corner.
