A huge milestone for the Hauraki Gulf - with new wide-ranging protections

A huge milestone for the Hauraki Gulf - with new wide-ranging protections

The Hauraki Gulf Marine Protection Bill passed its third reading last night.

It increases the marine area's protections 20-fold - from 0.3 percent to six.

It includes 12 new high-protection areas, stretching 800 square kilometres.

Live Ocean Foundation's Blair Tuke says this has been many years in the making.

He says to have it finally made into law is a reason to celebrate.
