A legal issue has cut short the trial of a Christchurch police officer, accused of stealing money handed in by members of the public

Former acting sergeant Brearna Kelsi Sloss was charged after a colleague allegedly found a purse with thousands of dollars of cash on her desk - and checked computer records to find contradicting information.

She was on trial, denying 26 charges including theft by a person in a special relationship.

Stuff reports a legal issue arose on day two, leading to the Judge abandoning it and suppressing the reason.

Sloss will face court again in November.
