People in Kaikoura are being urged to look for nationally vulnerable Hutton's shearwater birds, which may have crash landed

People in Kaikoura are being urged to look for nationally vulnerable Hutton's shearwater birds, which may have crash landed

The birds can get disorientated by artificial lighting like street lights, as well as residential and commercial lighting.

Kaikoura Wildlife Centre Trust volunteer manager Sabrina Luecht has told the Local Democracy Reporting service the birds are unlikely to fly immediately after crash landing, making them vulnerable to predators.

She says each loss of a breeding adult further decreases reproductive success in an already rapidly-declining population.
