Swimmer Erika Fairweather has emerged as a genuine medal hope at next year's Paris Olympics

Swimmer Erika Fairweather has emerged as a genuine medal hope at next year's Paris Olympics

The Dunedin 19-year-old has become the sixth fastest woman ever in the 400m freestyle - finishing just 0.62 seconds over the four minute mark at the nationals in Auckland.

Swimming NZ's Olympic programme lead Gary Francis says it puts Fairweather in the mix with the likes of Canadian Summer McIntosh and American Katie Ledecky.

Her training partner Zac Reid has also booked in world championship qualification in the men's 400 freestyle.
