A band of severe weather is about to hit the country with a stream of warnings in place

MetService has issued orange heavy rain warnings for the ranges of Westland and Fiordland north of Doubtful Sound and the Canterbury High Country and Otago lakes.

There's also orange strong wind warnings for the Canterbury High Country.

Meteorologist John Law says the lower North Island will also be impacted with wind warnings for Wellington.
