Deaths are begin to mount as violence between Israel and Palestine continues to escalate

Deaths are begin to mount as violence between Israel and Palestine continues to escalate

Israel has pummelled Gaza with artillery fire and air strikes, targeting Palestinian militant tunnels to try to stop rocket attacks on Israeli towns.

At least 122 people have been killed in Gaza and eight have died in Israel since the fighting began on Monday.

The BBC's Jeremy Bowen says it's not clear how long the violence will continue.

He says if there was a moment for diplomacy, it would be now.
