Brisbane protesters shine light on journalists killed in Gaza

Roughly 400 people, many wearing "Press" vests, were shining a light on the plight of media workers in the conflict.

Protesters have gathered in Brisbane to raise awareness of the journalists killed inside Gaza.

Roughly 400 people attended a rally outside ABC offices in South Bank at around 2pm on Sunday.

Many wore "press" vests with the names of deceased journalists, and a member of the rally handed ABC staff a list of names of media personnel who have died.

Brisbane protesters called on media organisations to increase coverage of the war as the world prepares to mark two years since the conflict began on October 7.

According to the Committee to Protect Journalists, at least 186 media workers, mostly Palestinian, have been killed while reporting on the war in Gaza.

Other organisations, like the Palestinian Journalists Syndicate, report the figure to be even higher, with some reporters even writing their own obituaries.

"Over the past 23 months, more journalists and media workers have been killed in Gaza than all conflicts and wars in recorded history," Justice for Palestine spokesperson Remah Naji said.

Several police officers monitored the peaceful protesters, who marched on to Musgrave Park.

Organisers were also calling on Brisbane City Council to light the Story Bridge in the colours of the Palestinian flag.
