    Wellingtonians have reported being jolted in their sofas and beds last night - by a sharp 4.9 magnitude earthquake



    The quake struck in the Cook Strait overnight, just after 9pm - about 25 kilometres northwest of Wellington, and at a depth of 22.

    Tens of thousands reported feeling the shake - with most describing it as moderate.

    One told our newsroom it began as an immediate loud bang.
