The 4.3 magnitude quake rattled the capital just before 7.30, centred about five-kilometres southwest of the city.
Geonet reports it was felt all the way up the Kapiti Coast, inland towards Martinborough, and as far south as Blenheim.
Residents say they could hear it coming, before a loud bang and a short sharp jolt.
