Orange level wind and heavy rain warning apply for southern and central parts - and the system will move north through the week.
MetService Meteorologist Lewis Ferris says winds in southern parts could reach 130 kilometres an hour, with a short respite before another active day of weather on Thursday.
Wind toppled a truck-and-trailer south of Tekapo about 7.30 this morning, blocking State Highway 8.
