Recovery operations appear to be back underway in Tauranga, although caution remains paramount

Recovery operations appear to be back underway in Tauranga, although caution remains paramount

Hundreds gathered in Mount Maunganui's Coronation Park last night, to remember the eight people killed in landslides in the region just over a week ago.

Six were buried after a slip hit a campsite at the base of Mount Maunganui - two people, a 15-year-old Auckland boy and 20-year-old male Swedish tourist, have been identified.

Herald reporter Sam Sherry says work stopped for a few hours yesterday over safety fears, but there are lots of trucks are heading through the cordon this morning.

He says there are still concerns about the unstable land, but officials and rescue workers are taking all the precautions they can.
