Koro Wetere is being remembered as a genuine man who did so much for Maori people

Koro Wetere is being remembered as a genuine man who did so much for Maori people

Mr Wetere died aged 83 at Te Kuiti Hospital this morning surrounded by family.

He worked as a farmer in the King Country, before moving into public service life and serving as the MP for the Western Maori electorate for 26 years.

He was also the Maori Affairs Minister in David Lange's Labour government in the 1980s.

Former Health Minister Michael Bassett sat next to Mr Wetere in cabinet for six years and says his influence on Maori-related legislation is unquestionable.

He says Mr Wetere had a major impact on the Waitangi Tribunal and the work it does today.
