    A political expert says the timing often wasn't right for Simon Bridges


    The former National Party leader is calling it a day after 14 years in politics - leaving Parliament in the next few weeks.

    Bridges is currently the MP for Tauranga and National's Finance spokesperson.

    Massey University associate professor Grant Duncan says there's a lot of "could have beens" in his political career.

    Among them - Duncan says Simon Bridges could have been New Zealand's first Maori Prime Minister.
