Communities around Hawke's Bay are commemorating 95 years since the 1931 earthquake

Communities around Hawke's Bay are commemorating 95 years since the 1931 earthquake

The quake struck the region at 10:47am on February 3 - leading to the deaths of 161 people in Napier, 93 people in Hastings, and two people in Wairoa.

It is the deadliest natural disaster in the nation's history.

Now 95 years later, communities around the region will gather to commemorate those who died and those who rebuilt the towns, cities and districts.

The Hastings commemoration will be held at Civic Square and starts at 10:30 this morning.
