Mainland Poultry is in full response mode, dealing with bird flu on one of its Otago farms

Mainland Poultry is in full response mode, dealing with bird flu on one of its Otago farms

The disease was confirmed at the Moeraki site on Sunday, and 80-thousand chickens are being culled, starting today.

MPI's also investigating a small farm near Dunedin, after a number of deaths -- not owned by Mainland.

Mainland Poultry CEO, John McKay says they're taking every precaution to ensure safe and secure disposal of chickens and waste from affected sheds.

He says it's testing all other South Island farms, with results expected next week.

McKay says the situation is hugely distressing for staff, who are deeply committed to bird welfare.
