An open ocean tugboat from Wellington has rendezvoused with an oil and chemical tanker stuck off the coast of Stewart Island

The 'Golden Mind' experienced steering difficulties west of Stewart island on Wednesday, and the ship and crew have remained there since.

Maritime NZ says the plan now is to tow the vessel to Timaru.

The crew are all safe and there have been no distress calls.
