Dick Quax: A master of many distances

Extraordinary Kiwi athlete Dick Quax has been described as a master of many distances

Dick Quax is being remembered for his extraordinary running prowess, following his death at age 70.

Quax won an Commonwealth Games silver medal in the 1500m in 1970, before focusing more on distance running with the arrival of Sir John Walker in the 1500m.

Quax would win silver at the 1976 Olympics in the distance and running rival and friend Rod Dixon joined him in changing.

Dixon says he said he would switch to 5000m, to which Quax suggested he might move to 10000.

Quax set a world record in the five thousand metres, as well as a debutant record in the marathon.

1974 Commonwealth Games 10 thousand metre champion Dick Tayler competed with and against Quax and says he was a great competitor and friend.

He says everyone liked beating Quax, but he was a great athlete and special person.
