    Green Party co-leader Jams Shaw tried to soldier on after being punched in the head while walking to work


    A 47-year-old man's been arrested over the attack outside Wellington's Botanic Gardens.

    Shaw was assessed by ambulance staff at the scene, carried on to the Beehive and attended a meeting - before going to hospital.

    Fellow Greens co-leader Marama Davidson says Shaw is shaken, and is resting at home after hospital treatment

    Stern words from Police investigating what they call a "cowardly attack" on Arthur Brown in Mangere over the weekend.

    In the early hours of Sunday morning, Brown was shot twice while waiting for a friend outside a set of shops in Mangere.

    Brown was linked to a street gang but it's not yet known whether the incident is gang-related.

    Detective Inspector Tofilau Faa Va'aelua says they're appealing for any information.

    A community sentence for a teacher who sexually assaulted a child is being slammed as a joke.

    The man - in his 60s - appeared in the Greymouth District Court on Wednesday.

    He admitted to touching and forcibly kissing a nine-year-old girl in 2012. and was sentenced to six months of community detention.

    Sensible Sentencing Trust manager Jock Jamieson says community detention is woefully inadequate.

    A convicted attempted murderer has had rape charges dropped after his accuser texted a witness.

    After telling the jury about her alleged ordeal, the 19-year-old woman sent messages to her best friend - the witness.

    The Otago Daily Times reports the friend had been with her and the defendant, Taukiri Chris Keen- immediately before the alleged rape.

    Judge Michael Crosbie says it undermined the trial process and the course of justice.

    The United States has at last joined the long list of countries grounding the Boeing 737 MAX 8 and 9 planes.

    It comes after a deadly crash involving the model of aircraft in Ethiopia earlier in the week - the second in five months.

    CNN's Richard Quest says no one knows why they changed their minds so quickly.
