ASB has reported a 28 per cent increase in retail trade spending volumes in the third quarter, compared to the one before it.

Senior Economist Mark Smith says they're surprised by how well the sector has bounced back.

He puts it down to the lifting of the lockdowns -- but also housing market buoyancy, which is supporting durable retail.
