Fears more New Zealand cheeses could be in the firing line of a European Union trade deal

The agreement boasts to boost exports to the EU by 1.8-billion a year by 2035 - but it's come at the cost of our ability to brand cheeses as feta.

After a nine year period, the only cheese sold as feta in New Zealand can come from Greece.

Speciality Cheese Makers Association board member Daniel Shields says the EU also may to add additional cheeses to that ban list in future.

He says small manufacturers may invest in the development of a new cheese type here - only to lose the rights to it in the future.
